From the desk of
Rabbi Perry Tirschwell

Arguably the most important thing that we can teach our children is Derech Eretz- to show respect for the feelings and concerns of all human beings. Therefore, we have chosen this as the second of our goals for this year, which we are launching at this coming week's shabbaton.

When our rabbis tell us that Derech Eretz kadma l'Torah, they mean that Torah can not take root in a person who does not treat others with respect. Derech Eretz must be a prerequisite to Torah study and observance, not an after-thought.

How do we teach respect? First and foremost by modeling it. We have to watch how we speak about people when they're not around, but our kids are. We have to catch them when they make the same mistake.

Respecting others also means respecting their "stuff". It is human nature to define ourselves to some extent by our possesions. When we use something without the owner's permission, we disrespect the owner.

Last, but certainly not least, our children must learn to respect intangibles- holy places. We talk and act differently in shul and yeshiva than we do on the street.

I invite you to be our partners in reaching this important goal.

Shabbat Shalom

The Week in Review

Last Saturday night, the sophomores painted the town red in their night out as a class! The evening started at Sara's restaurant in Hollywood, where there was enough pizza to feed an army and the soda flowed like water!

Dinner was followed by an evening of laser tag. The sophomores were decked out in full "battle" gear for the night. In the end, the girls came out with the most points and everyone teamed up against chaperones Rabbi Josh Spodek and Rabbi Benjy Horowitz, but a fantastic time was had by all!

On Sunday night, bestselling author Naomi Ragen spoke to a crowd at the Jewish Federation at an event to benefit WYHS. The audience was spellbound as Ms. Ragen described what inspires her novels, and everyone was inspired, in turn, by the author's strong support for Israel. The evening was a great success! Thank you to Mrs. Melanie Kaminetsky for organizing the program!

Round two of parent teacher conferences on Tuesday went off without a hitch. Parents got to experience life at WYHS as they packed the halls and moved from classroom to classroom to meet with various teachers.

Tuesday night's college finance meeting was also very well attended. Parents had the opportunity to learn valuable information about applying for financial aid and the various options available.

Exciting Girls Soccer & Volleyball

The girls varsity soccer team played their first match on Tuesday against a very tough team, Lake Worth Christian. Although they did not win, the girls and their coach were very happy with the way they played, especially on defense, holding their opponents to only two goals scored!

This Sunday, the girls volleyball team will gear up one last time this year to take on their toughest opponents yet -- their mothers! The mother- daughter game will take place at Advent Lutheran school (SE corner of Dixie Hwy. and Yamato Rd.) at 4:00 p.m. Make sure to be there to see who comes out victorious in this epic battle of the generations!

A Week You Don't Want to Miss!

The WYHS Open House for prospective parents and students in all grades will be held on Sunday, November 14 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the school. This is your chance to meet and hear from members of the administration and faculty, experience model classes, and get a taste of life at WYHS. For more information, please click here to contact the admissions office.

Yeshiva University and Stern College will be visiting WYHS on Thursday (not Monday, as previously announced) to speak to all seniors and to interview interested candidates. There will be presentations for parents in the evenings; on Monday night at 7:30 p.m. in Hollywood- Ft. Lauderdale at the home of the Bienenfelds (5921 SW 33rd Lane in Arapahoe) and on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. in Miami Beach at the home of the Turoffs (4500 Pinetree Road).

In addition, more seminary visits (Midreshet HaRova and MMY) are scheduled for this week. Click on the link in the link section above (for updated schedule information.

Next weekend's School Shabbaton is fast approaching! Students will leave from school next Friday at noon, will spend a meaningful, activity-packed Shabbat with their friends and teachers in Orlando, and will return late Sunday night after a full day at their choice of Islands of Adventure or Universal Studios!

On Monday, November 22, the day after the shabbaton, school will start late at 12:00 p.m. with college preparatory classes. There will be a 9:00 a.m. minyan at school that morning for the local students.

Pre Thanksgiving Events

The second lecture in the three part parenting series will be held on Tuesday, November 23 at 8:00 p.m. at the Young Israel of Hollywood. Adolescence expert Dr. Rona Novick will speak about how to help teenagers deal with competition, exclusion, and relationships. All parents are encouraged to attend this seminar. Attendance at one of the three parenting lectures is mandatory for all WYHS parents.

Erev Thanksgiving, Wednesday, November 24, will follow a Friday schedule with an early dismissal and Wednesday bell times.

The Junior Night Out will take place on Wednesday, November 24 immediately after school. Students will enjoy an afternoon of laser tag, followed by a barbecue dinner for the entire grade at the home of Daniel Poliak in Hollywood. The program will be over by 8:00 p.m. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the event.

Great News in Athletics at WYHS

This year, under the directorship of Athletic Director Melissa Pereira (pictured above), the WYHS sports program is better than ever! Several important changes were made this year, all of which have contributed to the phenomenal growth and improvement of the athletic program.

One key improvement was adjustment of the game and practice schedule to minimize the amount of school missed for sports games.

Games are now on Tuesdays after early dismissal, Thursdays, and Saturday nights, which means not only is there less missed class time but also more fans can attend the games! In the words of sophomore Jordana Kaminetsky, "We used to miss school for our games and we'd have tons of work to make up. Now we miss less work and we are still able to practice and play more than once a week!"

In addition to schedule changes, two new teams have been added to the WYHS Storm lineup! Boys varsity baseball and girls flag football will both be introduced this year!

As part of this bigger and better sports program, many exciting events have been planned for the upcoming months. On Monday, December 27, the boys varsity basketball team will compete against the Rabbi Alexander S. Gross Hebrew Academy of Miami at the American Airlines Arena, home of the Miami Heat! Fans can stay for a doubleheader and watch Shaquille O'Neal and the Heat take on the Atlanta Hawks later that evening! To order your tickets for this exciting event, click here

WYHS will also once again be hosting a Girls Basketball Tournament and Shabbaton over the weekend of April 2, 2005. Girls basketball teams from schools across the country will meet in Boca for some friendly competition and a chance to get to know each other!

These events and more are only possible due to the hard work and dedication of Mrs. Melissa Pereira, who, as athletic director, has taken WYHS sports to new heights.
