From the desk of Rabbi Perry Tirschwell

Last night's historic win by the girls basketball team of WYHS' first pennant should move all who can to show their support for the Storm by coming out this Motzei Shabbat for the District Playoff at 8 PM at Boca Prep.

I am thrilled to report that freshman David Belolo is on the road to recovery at Joe Dimagio Children's Hospital in Hollywood. Yaasher Koach to all the students and faculty who have gone to visit him. He welcomes visitors with a huge smile.

Mazel tov to Dr. Michael and Mrs. Ora Lee Kanner on the birth of their first grandson yesterday.

Shabbat Shalom and enjoy the well-earned rest during the the long weekend.

Rabbi Perry Tirschwell

Second Annual WYHS Pep Rally

Yeshiva Storm athletes were honored this Wednesday at the second annual WYHS pep rally (see pictures at left)! The boys and girls varsity basketball team athletes were annouced with great fanfare as the rest of the student body cheered them on.

The highlight of the program was a three-point nerf basketball contest featuring two girls varsity players, two boys varsity players, athletic director Melissa Pereira, and Rabbi Benjy Horowitz, who took his shots from a wheelchair! While junior Dovi Lamet came close to winning, scoring six baskets in 45 seconds, Rabbi Horowitz surprised everyone by scoring a buzzer- beater seventh basket to win the contest!l

Boys and Girls Basketball District Championships

The girls varsity basketball team played its first district game on Thursday evening against Trinity Christian. The Lady Storm held the lead the entire game, and senior Shira Pritzker scored the last point in the final seconds, nailing down the win 35-32! The entire team played unbelievably well, especially on defense.

With this victory, the girls advance to the championship round! Their game will be played this Saturday night, February 14th, at 8 p.m. at Boca Prep (Mission Bay in Boca). Admission to the game costs $5 per person. Come on out to support your Lady Storm in their fight for the district championship!

STORM WATCH Upcoming Sports Events

The boys varsity basketball team district playoffs begin with a game against Trinity Christian on Monday, February 16th (Presidents' Day) at 1 p.m. at Grandview Prep (Spanish River Road in Boca). Make sure to be there to cheer them on as they try to advance to the second round of playoffs!

Tennis Season Begins

After two Sundays of tryouts, the season begins for both the girls and boys varsity tennis teams. The season consists of ten matches, times and dates to be announced!

Girls Basketball Tournament Draws Near

Female yeshiva high school basketball players from across the U.S. and Canada are gearing up for the annual Girls Basketball Tournament, hosted once again by WYHS! The tournament and weekend Shabbaton will take place from February 27-29 in Boca.

The Week in Review
.
The freshman class had a blast this Tuesday at their barbecue and Miami Heat basketball game (see pictures at right)! After school ended on Tuesday, the freshmen made their way to Rabbi Spodek's house, where they consumed an unbelievable amount of hot dogs and hamburgers!

After the barbecue, the freshmen traveled to Miami to watch the Heat take on the Los Angeles Lakers! Although attempts to appear on the Jumbo-Tron were unsuccessful, everyone had a fantastic time cheering like crazy for the team of their choice in what turned out to be an incredible basketball game!

Rabbi Tirschwell and Mrs. Kanner traveled to Englewood, NJ last weekend to spend Shabbat with many of the WYHS alumni! This first-ever alumni shabbaton provided an opportunity for everyone to catch up on life after WYHS and to reconnect with old friends and teachers. Thank you to alumni liason Chava Turk (WYHS '02) for coordinating this successful weekend!

On Thursday, WYHS was honored to host two very special guest speakers. Rabbi Ari Kahn, director of the Bar Ilan University one-year program for overseas students and teacher at Aish HaTorah in Jerusalem, delivered a lively and thought-provoking speech to all WYHS girls about a new, more sophisticated understanding of the Purim story.

The senior girls were then privileged to hear from Rabbi Menachem Nissel, distinguished author and teacher at several well-known seminaries and yeshivas throughout Israel. Rabbi Nissel, who spoke to the girls as part of their Leadership Training Seminar (LTS), focused on finding your unique mission in life by discovering your true self.

On a related note, the LTS girls visited Brauser Maimonides Academy last week to give mishmar about Purim to the middle school girls.

The Week Ahead
.
Don't forget that there will be no school this Sunday or Monday, February 15th and 16th, in honor of Presidents' Weekend.

WYHS is privileged to host world-renown substance abuse expert Rabbi Dr. Abraham Twerski for two days next week. On Tuesday night, February 17th, the entire community is invited to to the school to hear Dr. Twerski speak about the critical issues confronting our teenagers.

Rabbi Twerski will then spend the following morning at WYHS meeting with groups of students. There will be a special faculty in-service that Wednesday afternoon to give the WYHS faculty the opportunity to hear from this unique individual.

Next week is packed with Israel visits from five different boys' yeshivas, whose representatives will be in school interviewing candidates for next year. A representative from Netiv Aryeh will visit on Tuesday, from Eretz HaTzvi on Wednesday, from Sha'alvim on Thursday, and from Mevasseret and Torat Chaim on Friday.

First National Merit Scholarship Finalists in WYHS History

WYHS is proud to congratulate seniors Danielle Kowal and Mordechai Hodkin (pictured above), the first National Merit Scholarship Award finalists in school history!

This distinction is no small achievement! Of the 1.3 million students who take the PSAT each year, 50,000 earn scores high enough to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program. Only 15,000 finalists are selected from among those high scorers!

Beginning in March, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) will notify approximately 8000 finalists that they have been selected to receive a Merit Scholarship. The NMSC will also announce the scholarship recipients in four separate major news media events.

To become a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, a student has to have superior grades, stellar recommendations, and an impressive resume.

Both Mordechai and Danielle are planning on learning next year in yeshivot before embarking on their college studies.
