From the desk of Rabbi Perry Tirschwell

Welcome to the great new format of Yeshiva High-lites! We kick off the second year of our revolutionary newsletter with a whole new look. In addition to exciting new colors, fonts and masthead (above), the important links section is now right below this introduction, and we've added sections for comments by readers and student birthdays.

Many thanks to WYHS Technology Director Mrs. Claudia Cohen for her boundless creativity and endless dedication to this publication and our school.

A special refuah shleima to Rabbi Benjy Horowitz, who is undergoing surgery today for an injury incurred "in the line of duty".

Shabbat Shalom and Enjoy!

Rabbi Perry Tirschwell

WYHS Alumni and Yeshivot in Israel
.
Each year, WYHS faculty visit our alumni in Israel and the yeshivot and seminaries to which our present seniors are considering applying. Mrs. Kanner visited our graduates and the women's schools in November and Rabbi Tirschwell visited our students and the men's schools in January.

The graduates felt that they were counseled well at WYHS in their yeshiva and seminary choices. Thirty six out of forty of this year's seniors are planning on studying in Israel next year before beginning their university studies in the US.

Second Semester Begins on a Sweet Note
.
The second semester began with an impromptu birthday party for Rabbi Tirschwell during the mid-morning break on Tuesday. One very large and very delicious cake fed the entire school and staff.

This was a very busy week for WYHS athletes! The girls varsity soccer district finals on Monday may not have produced a win for yeshiva, but the team played with their usual enthusiasm and great spirit.

After suffering a loss on Monday night, the Boys JV Team's huge victory against Boca Prep in on Wednesday was really exciting. The girls varsity basketball team also defeated Boca Prep on Wednesday with a final score of 35- 22.

Tennis tryouts for both boys and girls interested in playing varsity tennis will be held this Sunday, February 1st (and next Sunday) at 2 p.m. at South County Park in Boca. South County Park is located at 11200 Park Access Road, off of Yamato Road, west of US 441.

Check your snail-mailboxes for the ad blanks for the fifth annual WYHS Journal Dinner, which were sent out this week! The dinner will be held on Wednesday, March 17th at 6:30 p.m. at the Boca Raton Synagogue. WYHS is proud to be honoring Rabbi Gene and Mrs. Elka Klein, Dr. Gary and Mrs. Diane Magid, Mr. Gary and Mrs. Judi Krasna, Mr. Ricky and Mrs. Pam Turetsky, and Mr. Adam Dobrick. Check the links section above to download an ad blank directly from this email.

This shabbat, the WYHS Judaic Studies faculty hits the road and heads for the North Miami Beach Family Shabbat! Friday night davening will begin at 5:50 p.m. and will be followed by dinner and and oneg shabbat at Shaaray Tefillah.

All WYHS fathers and talmidim are invited to mincha and seudah shlishit at 5 o'clock on shabbat afternoon at the Dennis home. All WYHS mothers and talmidot are invited to mincha and seudah shlishit at 5 o'clock on shabbat afternoon at the Gold home. We look forward to seeing you there!

Second Semester Begins on a Sweet Note
.
This Sunday, February 1st, many WYHS freshmen and their parents will see a performance of The Chosen at 2 p.m. at the Coconut Grove Theater.

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held this Tuesday, February 3rd from 5-9:30 p.m. That night, there will also be a College Kickoff for Juniors and their parents to discuss how to approach the college application and decision process.

WYHS students will have the privilege of hearing from two very special guest speakers at the end of next week. On Thursday, the juniors and seniors will experience a Discovery Seminar lead by Rabbi Danny Mechanic of Project Chazon.

On Friday, Rabbi Aharon Adler, the Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Ner Tamid in Hashmonayim, Israel will speak to the school about Tu Bishvat, which falls on next shabbat.

Several Israeli boys yeshivot will be interviewing our students this week. Seniors will meet with representatives from Yeshivot Reishit Yerushalayim, Har Etzion (Gush), Ohr Yerushalayim (OJ), and Torat Shraga to interview for these various programs.

Next Shabbat, February 6th and 7th, WYHS graduates will spent shabbat together in Englewood, New Jersey at First Annual WYHS Alumni Shabbaton with Rabbi Tirschwell and Mrs. Kanner. The shabbaton will be an exciting opportunity to reconnect with friends as well as teachers and to extend the WYHS experience beyond the four years of high school.

Coming Events
.
WYHS is privileged to host world renown substance abuse expert Rabbi Dr. Abraham Twerski for two very special days in February. On Wednesday night, February 17th, the entire community is invited to to the school to hear Dr. Twerski speak about the critical issues confronting our teenagers.

Rabbi Twerski will then spend the following morning at WYHS meeting with groups of students. There will be a special faculty in-service that Wednesday afternoon to give the WYHS faculty the opportunity to hear from this unique individual.

On Wednesday, February 10th, the Freshman Class, and faculty members will travel to Miami to watch the Miami Heat take on the Los Angeles Lakers in what is sure to be an exciting basketball game! The program will "tip-off" with a barbecue at school at 3:30 that Wednesday afternoon.

And speaking of basketball....the WYHS Boys Varsity vs. Faculty Basketball Game promises to be a very tough competition. This game is not to be missed, so make sure to be there on Saturday night, February 21st at 8:30 p.m. at Sugar Sand Park in Boca.
